As it turned out, on back-to-back nights, I watched a couple movies that coincidentally are pretty close to each other alphabetically.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Timecop.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is based on author John le Carré’s novel and is purported to be a smart and highbrow film. Maybe it is, but to me, it was slow, confusing and boring. I don’t care that it got a score of 83%/65% on rotten tomatoes, it was a full 2 hours and 7 minutes of my life that I’ve lost forever.

It has a bunch of decent actors and it won some awards and was nominated for many more but that just goes to show that not everyone has the same taste in movies.

Timecop on the other hand stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mia Sara, Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend. It was directed by sci-fi DOP and director Peter Hyams and was absolutely destroyed by Roger Ebert so just based on those things alone, it would seem easy to see which movie was better.

The story was interesting and even though it was overly complex, it was still smart and well-done.

Not every movie needs to have guns and car chases in order to be successful but it does need to keep you awake and Timecop did a much better job of that than Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
