If you’re at this web site you already know that I like movies. What is a little less known is that the finished product is only part of what I enjoy about movies. In reality, a great movie truly is greater than the sum of its parts and Score takes a deep dive into one of my favorite elements of a movie, the soundtrack.
Almost every movie has a soundtrack, the music that is in the background and yet adds so much life to the movie. I have 1000’s of “albums” in my music collection. Almost half of them are soundtracks. You might think that that just means that they have the collection of songs from the movie. True, some of my favorites are exactly that. Pretty Woman, Top Gun, Flashdance and the like.
But, I am a tremendous fan of the actual movie soundtrack, the oft times, orchestral composition. Some movies actually come with a release of songs from a movie as well as the score. Both are equally fascinating to me. One of the best examples is the Kevin Costner, Robin Wright, Paul Newman movie, A Message in a Bottle. Half of the songs on the soundtrack are lyrical songs. The other half are instrumental accompaniment by Gabriel Yared. The documentary, Score, details dozens of composers and musicians and what goes into creating the score for a movie. The godfather of musical scores, John Williams, as well as Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman and so many other musical geniuses. It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I get that but it’s smack dab in my wheelhouse and I found it fascinating. If I found a similar movie on editing or cinematography or other elements like that, I’d soak it up.
