Coming on the heels of Zach Snyder’s Justice League we’re given a second helping of the kind of spectacle that only Zach Snyder can bring. This Netflix produced movie is supposed to be just the beginning of a franchise in this new zombie universe, leading next to a prequel of the outbreak.
Sure, it’s long, somewhat indulgent, storylines are left unresolved and it doesn’t know if it wants to be a full-on drama or comedy but that’s what you get with ZS. Parts of it are more Zombieland and others are World War Z. His last foray into the genre was the impressive remake of Dawn of the Dead, a movie that people didn’t think should be remade but along with writer, James Gunn, they put together a solid new story with exceptional call-backs to the original Dawn of the Dead from the 70’s.
The movie was given a 1-week limited theatrical release and I was able to squeeze in a showing at the recently reopened CMX theater in Burnsville. A sweet-looking theater if there ever was one. I’m thinking that not many people know it’s open because I was the only one at my screening and even as I left, I only saw about 10 other people. I’m really glad that I got to see it on the big screen with the powerful sound but if you pay attention, you can tell that it was designed for more of a 55” TV than a 55’ big screen.
The basic story is Ocean’s Eleven. Yes, seriously. A guy recruits about 10 people to help him steal hundreds of millions of dollars from a casino in Las Vegas. Of course, the caveat this time is that the city is overrun by zombies and a nuclear bomb is about to be dropped to destroy them all. Each person recruited has a specific skillset that makes them valuable to the team.
Even though it does seem a little bloated, it is a fun entry into the zombie universe. I’ve said it before and I’ll say again, I’m a fan of fast zombies. This movie has slow and fast zombies and it creates some extra fun scenes. One positive is that it only has 2 or 3 endings instead of the 5 or 6 that you usually get from Snyder. Fans of Fear the Walking Dead will be happy to see Garret Dillahunt back in the zombie world, playing a less than desirable character. It’s a minor spoiler to say that he gets his just rewards in a very entertaining way.
Your chance to see it in a theater might be over but do check it out on Netflix, knowing what you’re in for.
