Maybe the fact that few people remember much about 2017’s release of Justice League is maybe the best reason why we have Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The journey that this movie (as well as the original) has been through is bizarre, even by Hollywood standards. The death of Zack and Deborah Snyder’s is so very sad and tragic which I why he stepped away from the movie in the first place.

You can tell he had a very specific vision for this movie and it looks like he was finally able to realize it, even if it took him 4 hours, 2 minutes and 8 seconds to fully tell it. His eye for what he wants is very detailed and specific. He is a masterful story-teller, even if a bit long-winded.

Watching the movie it’s hard not to marvel at the scope of bringing together Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman along with other significant characters into a single story and movie. (see what I did there?) The subtle way that it flexes between its dark moods and dry humor is one of its strengths.

It does suffer through “superheroitis” where there are battles with so much going on that you can’t follow any of it. It also has about 10 endings. There is a significant change to the focus of one of the previously lesser used characters which may or may not have been the original intent.

There are several reasons to see it but just remember to set aside double the time you normally might for a movie.

    8 / 10
