If you go into a movie called Fantasy Island and you’re not willing to suspend your disbelief a little, trust me, you’re at the wrong movie.

As has been advertised, BLUMHOUSE’S Fantasy Island (yes, Blumhouse is part of the title for a very good reason) is a take-off from 1977 to 1984 TV series of the same name. The callbacks to the TV show are plentiful, some clever, some truly cringe-worthy. (I’m looking at you, Tattoo) One of the details of the TV show, and most definitely the movie, is that fantasies don’t always turn out the way you think they might, thus Blumhouse’s involvement leaning toward the horror aspect.

When I saw that it was rated PG-13, I got a little nervous wondering how much of a horror movie it really was going to be. Watching The Shining or Halloween in a version neutered for TV just changes everything about it. However, done in the right tone, it is possible to still do horror with a PG-13 movie. (See Happy Death Day. – yes, really….see Happy Death Day!) So, if you go into Fantasy Island knowing where your expectations should be, you might be pleasantly surprised. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a masterpiece and there are plot holes that you can drive a truck through but for what it is, it’s can be entertaining. Many will saying that I’m giving it too much credit but I thought it was ok.
