It was October of 1982 and the original Halloween was being shown on network TV. I had never seen it in a theater but I couldn’t wait to see what I already knew was a classic horror movie. The opening score was haunting and foreboding of what was to come. I’ve seen it many times since as well as some of the sequels but none will match the impact of the original.
Made on a shoestring budget that only added to the terror of the movie, it has become the standard that many horror movies have tried to emulate. It launched the career of Jamie Lee Curtis as well as put the director, John Carpenter on the map.
Horror movies generally have people making stupid choices over and over which lead to their demise. Though Halloween has a few of those, for the most part, much of it is believable to what someone might actually do. That adds to the authenticity of a true classic.
It’s Halloween 2020, a VERY scary time, indeed. Seeing this classic movie in the theater for the first time was exactly what I hoped it would be. A huge smile came across my face as that familiar music started and ran through the opening credits. The story is so well-written that even the stupid teenager tropes don’t bother you that much. It’s the non-slasher movie that started the slasher movie genre. See it with Halloween 2018 for a terrific double-feature.
