When the movie Unhinged was being made I’m sure they had no idea that it would be one of the most looked forward to movies in years but there couldn’t be a better movie to start things back up. It’s not a throw-away movie with a relatively small budget but you don’t have to think too hard and it’s actually really entertaining with awesome car chases and some of the most incredible crashes ever put to film. It starts off a little leisurely but that just makes it seem that much faster when it gets going.
It’s not a perfect movie and early in it there might as well be a sign flashing to point out a seemingly useless scene because it’s emphasized in such a way that you KNOW that it’s going to play a significant part in the movie later. The fights would make John Wick proud and there are a few unexpected surprises to keep you on your toes. As often happens, there are some hard-to-believe coincidences but just go with it.
Russell Crowe seems like an unusual choice for what some would see as a B-Movie but his presence actually gives the movie some cred that it might not otherwise have.
It’s a well-crafted movie with a really nice musical score to maintain tension and enough small surprises to keep you guessing. If nothing else, it has the best Volvo station wagon/minivan car chase ever! Give it a chance and support your local theater.
…and I’ll bet you think twice before honking your horn at someone when you drive home. “courtesy tap”.
