The filmmakers that made Underwater clearly know what works in a horror/thriller/monster movie work. That said, this is not a horror movie as it seems to be marketed as. Even more, Kristen Stewart is NOT Sigourney Weaver. I was asked if this movie is an Abyss wanna-be. It’s a great question but I think my answer is that it’s more of an Alien wanna-be, just underwater instead of outer space. I found myself wondering how they built a small city in the depths of the deepest part of the ocean and playing a game of dead pool in my head to guess who’s going to get knocked off next and who’s going to make it. I’ll give it props for one thing, it took advantage of my claustrophobia to make me close my eyes or look away but even Crawl did that….and better.
