Prior to 2020, movies that were delayed were an immediate red flag but the last year changed all the rules. Movies that were originally supposed to be released more than a year ago are still on the shelf with the hopes that they can still be the blockbuster that was originally predicted.
The Woman in the Window was never expected to be a huge movie so the fact that it was picked up by Netflix to go straight to streaming isn’t a big surprise but it’s interesting how its fortunes have changed. What likely would have been a “blink and you’ll miss it” theatrical run is currently the #2 streaming movie in the country.
All that being said, the move to Netflix and the wait has done nothing to make this a better movie. What looked like a strange movie when the first trailers were shown have proven to be just that, an odd and mostly uninteresting story. Amy Adams is fine as are the other actors but there really isn’t much about it that is all that much to hold your attention.
Want to see a better movie about someone confined to their house who is obsessed by watching their neighbors? Easy. Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. Same movie, much better. In fact, this movie is such a blatant rip off of it, you can actually watch part of it in the background of this movie.
