How do you say something is really good but not all that good at the same time? It might be when you’re talking about a movie with really good acting but that can’t make up for some weak story-telling. I’m a big fan of John Lee Hancock as a director. The Rookie and The Blind Side are 2 very entertaining movies. Word has it that he has had this script and movie ready to film for 20 year and here it is. If it had been done back then, it might have come across better but Rami Malek would have been 18 years old and probably not in that movie.

Denzel Washington plays a role that he could play in his sleep and some of his performance is so understated that you wonder if maybe he is. Jared Leto is just a weirdo and Rami Malek does a good job of making you wonder if he’s really a good guy or if he’ll stab you in the back.

In the end, none of it matters and that’s why I think the reception to the movie has been mixed at best. The ending isn’t all tidy and clean but I was ok with that. Sometimes life is like that.

It’s not a great movie but it’s really pretty good if you take it for what it is.

I’m still getting used to the idea of seeing a movie at my house and then walking across the street to see it in a theater. I know that option won’t be around forever but it is strange nonetheless and the same movie is “seen” differently if the screen is 70 inches vs. 70 feet.
