I am fascinated by directors that show a variety of range in the kinds of movies they direct. I’m actually working on a post highlighting exactly that. It’s impossible to see any similarities between some of the movies they are associated with. Other directors have their own style and stick to it without wavering. Without knowing anything about the movie, you can recognize their instincts and style.
A few years back I had read about how great The Lobster was. Well, for someone else maybe but not for me. I nodded off during it as it just didn’t make much sense to me. So, as I was looking for something to watch recently I saw a recommendation for The Killing of a Sacred Deer and remembered that several critics raved about it.
Well, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
The director of both movies, Yorgos Lanthimos, is nothing if not consistent. I made it all the way through the movie but it was tough. The story of a boy who is befriended by a doctor after that doctor was somewhat responsible for the boy’s father’s death has a ton of potential but to me, it was absolutely wasted. Or maybe being wasted is how you have to watch the movie. The main characters speak as if they are reading their dialog and it’s incredibly distracting and annoying. I was hoping for so much better. Needless to say, I’m pretty sure I won’t be watching any more of Yorgos Lanthimos’s movies.
