After a glowing recommendation about The Assignment, I figured, why not? So, I started it up and the main character just seemed “off” to me. Well, that’s because they are. The film was directed by long-time director, Walter Hill. He’s directed some really strong movies, including The Warriors and both 48 Hrs. movies. This wasn’t his best effort. I know it’s a movie and many times you have to suspend belief at least somewhat and I’m ok with that but this movie stretched that even a little too much for me. I won’t give too much of the plot away because that is a major part of the story so I’ll just call it a classic revenge movie. Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shalhoub both have significant roles but the movie is all about Michelle Rodriguez, who aside from a constant scowl is a decent actress. I had high hopes but it just didn’t do it for me.

Unless you stumbled across this movie by accident on Netflix, you probably have never heard of it. It failed miserably at the box office in 2017. Even by low-budget movie standards. Yet, it’s worth the view. A very unique story with some fairly decent performances by a few people you may not expect to see in a low-budget film. Sigourney Weaver fans will not be disappointed. But the performance that should be noted is that of Michelle Rodriquez, who I’d be willing to bet that the casual movie fan has to stop for a moment to remember who that is, but once you see her you say “oh yeah! I like her!” I’d say she took a chance with this role, but I feel it paid off and showed that she can do more than drive fast cars and beat people up. Well, she still drives fast cars and beats people up in this movie, but her character is so much more than that in this movie. I recommend, if it’s not too late, watch this movie without knowing anything about the story…you may find yourself gasping a breath of air out of shock within the first 15 minutes of the movie.
