Smile is part of a new breed of horror movies that you figure are going to be pretty lame and then they turn out to be kind of interesting. The Black Phone and Barbarian are 2 other recent examples.
Even after reading the detail of what the movie means and everything, I’m still not sure I understand all of it but that doesn’t diminish the enjoyment of the movie. It reminded me of It Follows, another one of those “out of the blue”, good horror movies. It has an interesting, if somewhat far-fetched storyline.
My only issue with Smile is that I wasn’t 100% on board with part of the ending. If you see it, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I just think that plot point could have been wrapped up better.
In the end, it was a nice change of pace and I’m curious to see what the inevitable sequel will be like.
