To be sure, My Spy will never be in the discussion of greatest movies of all time, but it isn’t really as bad as every indication was going into it. Originally scheduled to be released in August of 2019, the repeated delays in release marked it as one that the studio eyed as a flop from the word go, and it seemed that advanced audiences and critics have been piling on ever since. In the end, due to Covid, and nearly a year of delays, the movie fell into the long line of movies that went straight to streaming release, which probably was a good thing. Audiences would not have been pleased dropping $15 a seat to see it in theatres, but it actually is a fun ride for sitting on your couch on an otherwise uneventful evening.

This is Dave Bautista’s first leading role, and while no Oscars may be in his future, he suited this role just fine. This also is Chloe Coleman’s first major role in a motion picture and her future looks bright. And even though the story is somewhat predictable, there definitely were some laugh out loud moments. (The biggest flaw in this movie, as he is the biggest flaw in every movie he has ever been involved with, is Ken Jeong. The worst actor in Hollywood has the best agent in the world, as shown by the fact that he keeps getting roles.) If you go in with reasonable expectations, and, admittedly, an otherwise unbooked couple hours with little else to do, you will find yourself entertained and worth the time.
