It was announced today that Steven Yeun was nominated for his first Academy Award. All I have to say to that is, well, it’s about time!
He’s best known for playing Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead and after his nomination for Minari today even more people will learn about him. The crime of all this is that this movie, Mayhem, has been terribly overlooked for consideration.
In addition, the ultra-talented Samara Weaving from a few random movies and TV shows but most notably for her role as Grace in the highly underrated, Ready or Not is still waiting for the recognition that she deserves.
The movie is about a virus that causes people to go crazy. Hmmmm. Sound familiar?
Ironically, the movie I watched yesterday, Ode to Joy, was about a guy that faints when his emotions and impulses are magnified. Mashing those 2 movies together would have been a rush!
But let’s get back to Mayhem. I was going to watch a Nik Cage movie that I’ve heard is pretty twisted and out there, (surprise, I know) but as I was scrolling though the list to find Mandy, I saw this movie and it was exactly what I was looking for and it delivered.
It’s my current favorite movie genre, horror/comedy. You could have pulled Steven Yeun directly from the set of The Walking Dead (although he had been killed off by then) and he wouldn’t have even had to go through wardrobe or makeup because he was pretty much covered in blood for the whole movie. Samara Weaving even more so. It’s like she walked from the set of filming this movie directly to Ready or Not. All she had to do was change into a wedding dress, but she was already soaked in blood.
Look, I know that not everyone gets this kind of humor and that’s ok but when done right, the combination of 2 genres that seem to be completely opposite of each other coming together make for quite an entertaining recipe.
It’s less than 90 minutes of your life you’ll not even want to ask to get back.
