Sometimes being a chronic insomniac has its advantages. On the couch in the wee hours of the night being unable to sleep, I often times will look for movies on Netflix that will inevitably put me to sleep.
On this night a random search unearthed the 5-year old “Live by Night”. A gangster movie based in the 1920’s! Yeah, that’s never been done. Throw in a double whammy of Ben Affleck both starting and directing the movie…I had high expectations of sawing wood in no time!
What a surprise! Not the greatest movie of all time. Certainly not. Not even the greatest gangster movie. But going in with low expectations it was a pleasant surprise and sleep eluded me the entire movie.
While Ben Affleck was his usual self (boring – such as playing an autistic hit man in “The Accountant“), playing a reluctant gangster, his style suited the character perfectly (same as playing an autistic hit man in “The Accountant“) Add in strong performances by a large supporting cast coupled with a gangster movie told from a unique perspective and various surprising plot twists; the show stayed interesting throughout.
Again, my expectations were low and I suppose being slightly sleep deprived might have contributed, but this was an unexpected interesting and enjoyable find. I would recommend this movie on one of those laid back evenings (or late nights) when you aren’t quite sure what else to watch.
