This movie is based on a book by the same title and perhaps it would be helpful to have read the book first. The cinematic version tells the story of a mother and her four daughters navigating the trials and tribulations experienced while the man of the house is away serving his country during a time of war. The story covers many years but does so in a herky-jerky fashion jumping back and forth between current time and flash backs. (Pay attention to the length of the eldest daughter’s hair as a way to help you keep up.) Some aspects of the story are very powerful and moving, along with strong performances by all of the main actors, but the fashion in which the story is told is distracting. Certainly, the quality is much better, but if you like Hallmark style movies, you will enjoy this movie as well. And, again, perhaps if you read the book ahead of time, that will help too.
