Sometimes when sequels or especially prequels are announced of my favorite movies, I roll my eyes and think, “No, please don’t do that.” George Miller and his Mad Max movies, especially Mad Max: Fury Road goes against that sentiment and I couldn’t wait for the follow-up to Fury Road even though it’s in my all-time Top 5 movies.

I went to the earliest show that I could and decided to see it in the same theater that I had seen Mad Max: Fury Road with the same person who went with me before. I’ll admit, my hopes were pretty high and that can be dangerous. They crash to earth if the movie doesn’t live up to expectations. I’m thankful to say that Furiosa met my expectations and then some.

I was asked how to summarize the movie and my best analysis is, “John Wick in the desert.” Fury Road was unapologetically a car chase movie and a very good one at that. Furiosa is a revenge tale and a very good one at that. Too often when I watch a prequel and know that certain characters will survive, it makes you not care for their story but Furiosa becomes such a different person that you’re engaged to see what made her that way. There are numerous other characters that are in Furiosa that also make it into Mad Max: Fury Road as it’s a direct prequel and the events of it follow into the next movie immediately.

The scenes that imitate Mad Max: Fury Road and even other movies like Gladiator (also in my Top 5) were cool to see.

It’s hard to explain but somehow Furiosa made Mad Max: Fury Road even better for me, even though it was already one of my favorites. To fill in the backstory in such a way was so cool.

…and yes, Mad Max is in it, for about 5 seconds.
