For the first time in 18 months I went to a movie and didn’t see the trailer for Black Widow before the movie…because the movie WAS Black Widow. After being delayed over and over and getting it rammed down my throat, I was expecting to just despise this movie. Well, guess what? I was quite pleasantly surprised.
I liked it so much more than I thought I would. It has a few things going for it. 1. It’s the least “Marvely” movie in the Marvel universe. It still has outrageous battles and fight scenes but there aren’t 30 endings and the special effects are not so in your face that it feels like it might be able to happen. 2. It has a story, beginning, middle and end. (kinda) Yes, it’s a bit of a buzzkill because of what we know happens to Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame but you get drawn into the current story, not one that has yet to happen. 3. The actors around Scarlett Johansson, specifically Florence Pugh (Midsommar will mess you up!) are terrific. Even David Harbour, who sometimes is just too much is really good in this movie.
I thought for sure that after seeing 100 different trailers for the last 18 months that I knew everything that would be in the story but there really was so much more. I actually will probably see it again.
