Add Avatar: The Way of Water to the list of sequels from this year that took more than a decade to make it to the screen that are actually quite good. Just as Top Gun: Maverick did this summer, the Avatar sequel wasn’t just a “mail it in” retelling of the original. I’ll be the first to say that James Cameron is an arrogant and overbearing director, but no one can take away from his imagination.

As I watched the movie, I kept telling myself that everything I was seeing was something that doesn’t actually exist and yet you really feel like it could. From the animals and sea creatures to the airships and robots. What Cameron also does well is integrating a story that is somewhat interesting into all of the visually stunning imagery. I highly suggest seeing it in 3D on the biggest screen possible. It would be a completely different movie otherwise.

The ending even harkens back to scenes from Titanic and you’ll find yourself smiling at the small touches from his movie from many years ago.

Since Avatar 3 has already been shot, I’m very interested to see what world we’re taken to next.
