Going into a “mystery movie” is always a crap shoot. When it’s a movie that hasn’t eve been released yet, it makes it more interesting. AMC Theaters has introduced a new program called “Screen Unseen” where you buy a ticket and they surprise you with a new movie that’s coming out soon.
Recently American Fiction was the showing. I had seen one trailer for it and was only vaguely familiar with it. Jeffrey Wright is the lead actor and so when he appeared onscreen, I had high hopes for it. When the other actors in the movie were listed, my hopes dropped.
I did stay for the movie and I really liked it, probably because it went against what I was expecting. A struggling legit writer writes a “ghetto” book under a pseudonym and it sells millions of copies. He’s frustrated and gets angry at the process that only stereotypes sell big. The acting is good all-around and even though few people will see it, I’m glad I stayed for it.
