Have you ever seen a movie and it just wasn’t doing anything for you and then the ending just grabbed you and flipped the whole movie for a memorable experience?
Well, The Substance does the opposite. The movie is going along, an interesting premise, and then the final 45 minutes just ruins the entire hour and 45 minutes that was before it. In fact, there was a point where they could have ended it and it would have been intriguing and a little mind-bending to think about what happened next but it would have been so much better.
Demi Moore plays an actress who is getting older and the studios want to force her out for someone younger and prettier. The casting was spot-on. Demi Moore is still pretty but she played the role flawlessly. Dennis Quade plays the studio head and he’s the perfect little weasel. An opening scene with him eating shrimp will make you laugh and gag at the same time.
The Substance is a really good 1¾ hour movie and a terrible 2½ hour movie.
