You never know what to expect at a M. Night Shyamalan movie. I don’t mean that in terms of the story and his twists and surprises but rather if the movie is going to be entertaining and enjoyable or completely off the rails.
Trap is both. The story and movie are at times absolutely brilliant in the way it’s filmed and presented. It has times of real tension and you wonder what could possibly happen next. Then, a scene happens that you could drive a Mac truck through the plot hole. Something that could never happen in a million years.
Much is made about giving away the fact that the Josh Hartnett character is shown as the bad guy in the trailers. Actually, if you never saw a trailer, you know it before the opening credits are finished and the movie uses it to its advantage. You secretly want to scream at a person to watch out because of what you already know but they have no idea. And Josh Hartnett is good for the role because it somewhat plays against the type of characters he usually plays.
The other interesting casting choice is Saleka Shyamalan, the director’s daughter, who plays the pop star singer. Not sure if that was to give her a boost to her career or what. She’s an okay singer but her acting leaves something to be desired.
M. Night Shyamalan has never quite captured the magic of his first movies, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, though some have been decent. If you’re looking for a “twist”, I’m not sure there really is one unless you count the last scene of the movie.
As with too many films lately, so much potential but just couldn’t knock it out of the park.
